Legoland Malaysia

I took a trip to Legoland Malaysia together with my summer school classmates. We got a package deal for $58 from Transtar Travel that included 1-day admission ticket + 2-way coach transfer via Woodlands Checkpoint. Immigration clearance took ages as there was a huge bunch of school kids in front of us, heading for some kind of camping trip. Fortunately, traffic wasn't so bad on the way there. Despite leaving the travel agency at Golden Mile Complex at 9.45am, we only arrived at Legoland 2 hours later, meaning it was already time for lunch, so we decided to have KFC outside the park. My meal cost a decent RM12, but the chicken was exceptionally oily.

The park was very quiet, since it was a Monday and most kids were back to school. Moving in a clockwise direction, we went to the Lego Technic zone first. The first ride we took was Project X, a small roller coaster ride. It was a decent first ride, but I thought that the track layout was rather strange. There was only 1 big drop followed by many winding turns, resulting in a fairly uneventful 2nd half. Ride photos are available at RM50. Initially thought of trying this water ride called Aquazone Wave Racers but realised it was just a spinning ride on water. Not like you could actually manouvre your vehicle in any other way.

So, we moved on to the next zone called Lego Kingdoms. Here lies the park's best ride, The Dragon, which is a roller coaster. At first it reminded me of Universal Studios Singapore's Shrek roller coaster, but this one is much taller and faster. It also includes a short indoor portion which ends with a nice surprise leading into the lift hill.

Next, we proceeded to Imagination. An observation tower ride provides a decent view of the entire park as well as the adjacent water park. Also available in this section is a 4D cinema. We watched a show called Lego Racers and it was a huge disappointment. The effects were minimal, the seats don't even move, and the story was lame. Shrek 4D at USS seems so much more entertaining in comparison.

The Land of Adventure zone is home to the log flume ride Dino Island. Check out the Coach bay and parking lot in the background. It was so empty! Dino Island is a water ride that guarantees to soak riders. In fact, the boats also get flooded to ankle level during the ride so DO NOT wear shoes onto the ride! Drying pods are available at RM10 per use. We got drenched but decided not to waste our money on this. Also at the Land of Adventure zone is the Lost Kingdom Adventure, which is an interactive ride where you shoot targets and try to achieve as high a score as you can. I failed miserably at this ride.

Moving on, we visited the Miniland section, which is undoubtedly the highlight for most park visitors, us included. This features lego structures of major Southeast Asian cities, with a focus on Malaysia. Apparently the newest addition to the Miniland exhibits is a small Star Wars section, featuring a lego Death Star, coupled with Darth Vader's pod in hot pursuit of a Rebel Fighter.

At about 3pm it started drizzling, so we decided to take a tea break at the Market Restaurant. This is located in the Lego City section, which also has some fun kids attractions such as the Driving School (currently under maintenance) and Boating School, where you can drive your own vehicles around a small circuit. I remember one similar attraction in East Coast when I was in primary school. Kids can learn basic traffic rules there. After having a light snack, we headed back to Miniland to take more pictures.

When we were finally done snapping away with our cameras, we headed back to the 2 roller coasters for a few more rides before finally calling it a day at the gift shop. I didn't buy any souvenirs; I personally think that the souvenir shops in USS have the superior selection of merchandise.

Overall, the theme park definitely appeals more to young children, but I was happy I got to experience it once. I was glad that we didn't have to wait very long for any ride. In fact, the Legoland Express, a train ride that brings riders through a few sections of the park was the only ride that had a wait time of over 10 minutes. I also liked that unlike USS, storage racks are available for all rides, so you can bring your bags along while waiting in line, and there is no need to use lockers.
